Belgium's public fishing spans the canal-rich flatlands of Flanders and the reservoir and river fishing of Wallonia's Ardennes.

Flanders

Belgium's northern region — a dense network of navigable canals, gravel pits and natural lakes within easy reach of the Channel Tunnel. Excellent bream, carp and zander.

Carp fishing in Belgium

Belgium punches well above its weight as a carp fishing destination. The Wallonian reservoir lakes — Lac de Plate Taille, Lac de l'Eau d'Heure and the surrounding complex — hold enormous carp in beautiful Ardennes scenery. Night fishing is generally permitted at these venues and bivvy accommodation is standard.

In Flanders, the large navigable canals hold strong carp populations alongside bream and zander. The Albert Canal, the Bocholt-Herentals Canal and the canals around Antwerp and Ghent are all within easy reach of the Channel Tunnel. Schulensmeer, a 210-hectare natural lake in Limburg, is one of Belgium's most popular free public fishing venues.

Belgium is often overlooked by UK anglers heading further south to France, but its proximity — many venues are just 90 minutes from Calais — and the quality of its public fishing make it an excellent short-break destination.

Belgian fishing licences

In Flanders, all anglers require a VISpas (groot visverlof), issued by Sportvisserij Vlaanderen. The annual licence covers most public lakes, rivers and canals, with night fishing permissions built into site-specific rules. Buy online at sportvisserijvlaanderen.be before your trip.

In Wallonia, you need a Permis de Pêche from the Walloon government, available online at peche.wallonie.be. Some larger reservoir venues may require an additional permit — check each venue page for details.

UK anglers should purchase licences before travel. Always carry your licence while fishing — inspectors operate on Belgian public waters throughout the season. PiscaMaps shows the relevant authority for every Belgian venue.
