Carp fishing in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia's clearest carp-fishing region is Posavina Canton on the Sava river, where former brickworks and gravel-pit lakes near Orašje have been developed specifically for carp and grass carp — the Ciglana complex runs a strict catch-and-release regime with numbered fishing positions, and silver/bighead carp have been reported over 30kg locally.

Beyond Posavina, confirmed carp waters now span most of the country: Buško jezero (Bosnia's largest natural lake, Canton 10), the Pliva Lakes near Jajce (Central Bosnia), Boračko jezero and Jablaničko jezero (Herzegovina-Neretva), and in Republika Srpska, Bilećko jezero, Zvorničko jezero, Bočac Lake and Pelagićevo Lake — the last with recorded carp over 20kg.

Bilećko jezero holds the single most specific confirmed rule found anywhere in Bosnia: night fishing is permitted, but boats are banned, with real pricing (50/70/100 KM for a week, month or quarter).

Bosnian fishing licences: three legal systems

Bosnia has no single national fishing law. The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) — 10 cantons — assigns fishing-area concessions by cantonal tender to a rights-holder, who may sell permits to anglers who've passed the domestic fishing exam (ribički ispit). Foreign nationals can buy a permit without needing to pass that exam — a genuinely useful carve-out for UK visitors.

Republika Srpska (RS) is a separate legal entity with its own Zakon o ribarstvu (72/12): permits (dozvole) come in day/week/month/year variants, colour-coded by type and water category, each with a precisely defined validity window.

Brčko District is a third, self-governing system with its own standalone fishing law. Always check which of the three applies to the water you plan to fish — PiscaMaps shows this for every venue.
