About Fishing in Veszprém

Veszprém county holds the northern shore of Lake Balaton, from Keszthely to Balatonfüred. The Tapolca basin has spring lakes and the Tapolca Stream — one of the few places in Hungary with naturally reproducing trout. Tihany peninsula marks are top catfish spots on the lake's deepest section.

Best Times to Fish in Veszprém

Spring (Mar–May)
Water temperatures rise and fish become active after winter. Carp begin moving to shallows from late April. Zander and pike feed aggressively as prey fish gather near structure.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Peak catfish and carp season. Tisza catfish move shallow at night; larger carp are taken on surface baits during warm evenings. Night fishing with mandatory lighting produces the best results.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Best bank sport of the year as fish feed up hard before winter. Carp average weights increase in October. Zander and pike on lures peak in September as water clears.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Most running waters hold chub and barbel active in cold temperatures. Still waters slow down significantly — focus on deeper holes and reduced rigs. Check seasonal method bans on Tisza-tó.

Fishing Licence — Veszprém, Hungary

All anglers fishing in Veszprém must hold two documents: a state ticket (állami horgászjegy) and a water-specific territorial permit (területi jegy). Both are available through the HORINFO system at horgaszjegy.hu.

Tourist state ticket costs approximately €9 for 90 days / 1 rod (standard 2-rod ticket available at higher cost). A catch log (fogási napló) is mandatory — record every catch with time (to the minute), location and weight. Logs must be submitted within 30 days of expiry. The HORGÁSZ app can be used for digital logging from April 2026. Failure to carry valid documents or falsifying the catch log carries fines up to 500,000 HUF (~€1,280).

Lake Balaton: a separate Balaton territorial permit is required in addition to the state ticket. Night fishing is permitted on Balaton with mandatory continuous lighting. Boat fishing is allowed on most Balaton sections but check local restrictions for your specific mark.
