Canal pike are often well-conditioned and can reach impressive sizes due to the abundance of bream and roach. Lure fishing with soft plastics, spinners and small plugs worked along lock walls, bridges and reed beds accounts for many fish. Static deadbaiting with roach or smelt is highly effective in winter. Always use a wire trace and handle fish with care.
Irish canal coarse fishing is ideally suited to pole or waggler tactics. Fish a maggot, caster or small worm at around half to two-thirds depth, feeding little and often with loose maggots.
