Lac Pavin is a scenic 45-hectare natural lake in the Auvergne mountains offering solid carp and catfish fishing alongside pike, zander, and tench — ideal if you're seeking a quieter, more scenic alternative to the commercialised French venues. Sunrise-to-sunset fishing only (no night sessions) with daily permits required, though rental boats are available from the lakeside restaurant if you fancy exploring deeper water. This is a 380-mile haul from Calais, so best combined with other regional lakes; check with AAPPMA d'Allanche et Murat for current permit details and access.
Night fishing at Lac Pavin is not permitted. Night carp not authorised on this lake. Cantal's mountain/river waters are predominantly 1st category. Source: auvergne-peche.fr Anglers must leave the bank before dark.
Boat fishing: Boat access is restricted at Lac Pavin. Navigation is permitted exclusively with rental rowing boats (barques) from the on-site restaurant/Hotel Lac Pavin. Private boats may not be launched (no slipway/cale de mise à l'eau). No motor of any kind (thermal or electric) is mentioned as permitted — angler accounts explicitly note fishing 'sans moteur' (without motor). Boat rental: half-day = €7, full day = €13. Reservation required in advance by contacting the restaurant (tel. 04 73 79 62 79). Rowing boats only; fishing from the bank is not explicitly authorised, as multiple sources state fishing is 'autorisée en barque' (by boat only).
Bivouac & overnight camping is not permitted at Lac Pavin. Overnight parking is explicitly prohibited at the Lac Pavin car park ('Stationnement nuit: interdit'). The lake is located within the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, where bivouac is tolerated only on landowner consent from 20h–8h and is forbidden on volcanic slopes and summits. The Outtrip source mentions a 'spot de bivouac et de van' on the parking area, but this conflicts with the official auvergne-destination.com notice prohibiting overnight parking. The lake is classified as 'eaux closes / domaine privé', under the management of the Association de Gestion du Lac Pavin (municipality of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise). No specific bivouac authorisation on the lake shore has been found. Standard French bivouac law (one night, sunset to sunrise, leave no trace) is not automatically applicable given the private/managed status and the explicit overnight parking ban.
Required permits & cards: Mandatory: 'Carte spéciale Association de Gestion du Lac Pavin' required in addition to any standard fishing licence. Pricing 2025 — Full day with federal/interdepartmental card: €7; Full day without card: €14; Half-day with federal card: €5; Half-day without card: €10. Cards sold at: Office de Tourisme du Sancy, on-site at the restaurant, or online. A standard AAPPMA federal fishing card/licence is still required and gives a discount on the lake card.
