About Fishing at Réservoir de Montézic

Réservoir de Montézic is a vast 205-hectare artificial lake in the Auvergne highlands offering excellent carp and catfish potential across extensive banks, though night fishing is prohibited due to EDF safety protocols around the pumping station. The sheer size rewards exploration, with good populations of carp, bream and pike across varied habitat, though you'll need to fish during daylight hours only and stick to designated bank access areas. Get permission from FD 15 (Fédération Départementale de la Pêche du Cantal) before your trip, and check current EDF restrictions, as security regulations can affect certain zones.

Réservoir de Montézic is 432 miles from Calais. For UK anglers willing to make the drive into Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes — one of France's most varied fishing regions, with venues ranging from Alpine lakes to lowland reservoirs — the fishing is well worth it.

Fishing Rules & Regulations — Réservoir de Montézic

Night fishing at Réservoir de Montézic is not permitted. Night carp not authorised on this lake. Cantal's mountain/river waters are predominantly 1st category. Source: auvergne-peche.fr Anglers must leave the bank before dark.

Boat fishing: Boat access is restricted at Réservoir de Montézic. All nautical activity, including boats of any type, is explicitly prohibited for safety reasons linked to the EDF pumping operations and extreme tidal range (±8 m daily). Shore/bank fishing only ('pêche du bord uniquement pour des raisons de sécurité'). Navigation interdite confirmed by multiple sources including achigan.net and tourisme-aveyron.com. No permit exists to access the water by boat — the prohibition is absolute.

Required permits & cards: Standard annual fishing licence (carte de pêche) mandatory. No additional day-permit or supplementary lake pass identified. Fishing rights held by the Fédération de Pêche de l'Aveyron (FD12 / FDAAPPMA 12), not FD15 as initially stated — the lake is administratively in the Aveyron (commune of Montézic, 12460), though geographically near the Cantal border. Stocking co-financed by EDF. A temporary fishing reserve (réserve temporaire) applies seasonally to the sector between the digue de la Prade (upstream limit, left bank) and the end of the chemin de Puech du Comte (downstream limit) — during this reserve period, all fishing is totally prohibited in that sector. Black bass: mandatory no-kill (remise à l'eau obligatoire). Crayfish permit required separately if applicable.

Managed by FD 15 / EDF. Always verify current rules with the AAPPMA before your session — regulations can change seasonally.
