About Lesser Poland

Lesser Poland (Małopolska) encompasses the Kraków area and the Polish Carpathians — a highland region of exceptional beauty and diverse fishing. The Tatra mountains on the Slovak border (included in the national park) are protected, but the sub-Tatra rivers — Dunajec, Białka, Czarny Dunajec and Skawie — hold wild brown trout and grayling in crystal-clear water just outside the park boundary. The Dunajec canyon at Szczawnica, where the river forms the Slovak border, is one of Poland's most dramatic fishing settings.

The Raba, Wisłoka and Wisłok rivers drain the Beskid ranges and become productive barbel, chub and asp rivers as they reach the plain. Jezioro Czorsztyn — the large reservoir on the Dunajec below Nowy Targ — provides stillwater carp, pike and perch. Kraków John Paul II airport serves the region with direct UK flights from multiple operators — one of the best-connected Polish cities for UK visitors. The region is approximately 18 hours from the Channel Tunnel by road.

Key species include brown trout, grayling, barbel, chub, asp, carp, pike, huchen.

Permits & Rules in Lesser Poland

No national angling card is required for visitors. Buy a permit online at wedkarz.pzw.pl from the Lesser Poland PZW district. Typical cost: 1-day ~€18, 7-day ~€45.

Lesser Poland is a mountain voivodeship — many rivers hold trout and grayling and are restricted to dawn–dusk fishing. Always check the specific permit conditions for the watercourse you intend to fish.
