Portugal is best reached from the UK via the Brittany Ferries Portsmouth–Santander crossing (~24 hours), landing you in northern Spain within a 2–3 hour drive of the Portuguese border. Carp fishing in the large Alentejo reservoirs (Alqueva, Vigia, Montargil) peaks from April through October, with late summer producing some of the continent's biggest catches. The water temperature in these large southern reservoirs stays high enough for active carp through November. Trout fishing in the northern mountain rivers (Lima, Minho tributaries) is restricted to the official season (typically February–August). For black bass, June through September in the reservoirs is outstanding.
