Night fishing: There is no statewide night-fishing closure for the reservoirs, but the Koke'e Public Fishing Area on Kaua'i is open only 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and only during the trout season. Check the current DAR freshwater rules for the specific water.

Boats: Wahiawa (Lake Wilson) has a boat ramp and trailer parking at the Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area. Waita and Wailua reservoirs on Kaua'i are bank and car-top access. Nuuanu Reservoir No. 4 is bank fishing only and needs a Board of Water Supply permit on top of the state licence. Puu Lua at Koke'e is bank and small craft.

Bank & bivvy camping: Koke'e State Park on Kaua'i has a campground and cabins near the Public Fishing Area (state permit required). The Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area on O'ahu is day-use. The other waters have no camping.

Tackle: Peacock bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish and tilapia are taken under Division of Aquatic Resources reservoir rules. Snakehead are present and, as a prohibited invasive species, must not be returned to the water alive.

Fishing Licence for Wahiawa Public Fishing Area (Lake Wilson)

Anyone 16 or older needs a State of Hawai'i freshwater game fishing licence — the resident annual is about $6, the non-resident annual about $26, with a 30-day tourist licence (~$11) and a 7-day tourist licence (~$6). Seniors 65 and older and anglers under 16 fish freshwater free. Buy online from the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources. There is no park entrance fee at the Public Fishing Areas. A State of Hawai'i freshwater game fishing licence covers this water — it is a DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources Public Fishing Area. (Nuuanu Reservoir No. 4 also needs a Honolulu Board of Water Supply permit.)
