Access & Rules at Lake of the Woods

Night fishing: No general night-fishing closure in Minnesota. Some designated trout lakes and streams close overnight or have a shortened season, and a few border waters have their own hours — check the current MN DNR regulations for this water.

Boats: Boats and motors are allowed on public waters; some lakes carry no-wake or horsepower limits. AIS law is enforced statewide — drain water, remove plants/mussels, and dry or decontaminate before leaving the access.

Bank & bivvy camping: Camp at state parks, state forest campgrounds, WMAs and DNR rustic campsites; the Boundary Waters needs a BWCA permit. Dispersed shoreline camping outside designated sites is generally not allowed.

Tackle: Minnesota licence covers the MN portion; the Ontario side (incl. much of the water off the Northwest Angle) needs an Ontario licence. Different limits apply on each side and on the Rainy River sturgeon season.

Rules verified 2026-09-02 against MN DNR regulations. Always confirm the current rules before you fish.
