Wallonia covers the French-speaking south of Belgium — the Ardennes, the Meuse valley and some of Europe's finest public carp fishing. The Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure and Lac de Plate Taille are world-class. Wallonia's rivers hold strong pike and perch throughout.
All anglers fishing in Wallonia require a Permis de Pêche from the Walloon government. The annual licence is available online at peche.wallonie.be and covers public rivers, streams and canals across the region.
For the major reservoir venues — including Lac de Plate Taille and the Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure complex — an additional site permit is required on top of the standard annual licence. Check the relevant fishing association website before you travel. UK anglers should purchase licences before leaving — always carry your licence while fishing, as inspectors operate regularly on Wallonian public waters.
Wallonia is Belgium's most varied fishing region. Its reservoir lakes — particularly Lac de Plate Taille (353ha) and the Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure complex — are internationally recognised carp venues, with fish to 30kg+ regularly recorded. Night fishing is permitted at most reservoir venues and bivvy camping is standard practice.
Wallonia's river network is extensive, covering the Meuse, Ourthe, Semois, Amblève, Lesse and Bocq. The Ourthe and Semois are renowned for their scenery as much as their fishing — the Ardennes valleys make for exceptional overnight sessions. Species across Wallonia's rivers include Barbel, Chub, Pike, Perch, Trout and Grayling alongside Carp in the lower reaches.
Distance from Calais varies by province — Hainaut is around 120 miles from the Channel Tunnel terminal, while the deeper Ardennes venues in Namur and Luxembourg provinces are 160–190 miles. Most Wallonian venues are very accessible from the UK via the Hook of Holland ferry or the Channel Tunnel.
