Lac de Chailloux is an intimate 6-hectare natural lake in the Ain region, offering excellent carp fishing from the bank in a peaceful setting around 400 miles south-east of Calais. Day fishing only, with solid populations of carp, tench, pike and perch across mixed depths—ideal if you're seeking a quieter alternative to busier French waters. You'll need to join the local AAPPMA de Nantua and obtain a French fishing licence before fishing.
At 397 miles from Calais, Lac de Chailloux requires a longer journey from the UK, but Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes — one of France's most varied fishing regions, with venues ranging from Alpine lakes to lowland reservoirs — rewards the trip.
