Lac de Montbel is a sprawling 478-hectare reservoir in Ariège offering excellent carp potential alongside catfish, pike and zander — ideal for UK anglers seeking a diverse mixed fishery with real scope. Night fishing is permitted in designated zones, and the lake welcomes electric-motor boats only, making it perfect for exploring different swims across this vast water. At 551 miles from Calais, it's a serious road trip best suited to a longer expedition, but the size and fish variety justify the effort — you'll need a valid French fishing licence and AAPPMA permit for Ariège (Fédération Ariège Pêche).
