Lac des Cordes is a compact high-altitude natural lake in the Briançon area of Provence, offering intimate bank fishing for pike, perch and tench in stunning mountain scenery—a refreshing change from lowland French reservoirs. At just under 2 hectares, it rewards focused stalking and light tackle work rather than long-distance casting, and the pristine Alpine setting makes it ideal if you're combining fishing with exploration of the region. Note that night fishing is not permitted here, and you'll need a valid French fishing licence plus AAPPMA membership for Hautes-Alpes (contact FDAAPPMA 05).
At 480 miles from Calais, Lac des Cordes requires a longer journey from the UK, but Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur — a stunning region with mountain lakes, large reservoirs and excellent carp fishing in the south — rewards the trip.
