Lac Noir is a tiny, intimate alpine lake in the Ubaye valley that won't suit dedicated carp anglers—it holds pike, perch and tench rather than carp, making it better suited to mixed coarse fishing. Located nearly 500 miles south of Calais in the high Alps, it's a serious trek for a UK trip and offers bank fishing only with no night fishing allowed. Check with FDAAPPMA 04 for day-ticket availability before making the journey, as remote alpine venues can have restricted access.
Lac Noir is 499 miles from Calais. For UK anglers willing to make the drive into Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur — a stunning region with mountain lakes, large reservoirs and excellent carp fishing in the south — the fishing is well worth it.
Night fishing at Lac Noir is not permitted. Night carp not authorised on this mountain/alpine lake. Only 4 specific lowland plans d'eau in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence have night carp authorisation (Lac de la Forestière, Buissonnades Est/Sud, Lac du Brunet, Retenue de Castillon). Source: AP n°2025-029-006 — peche04.fr Anglers must leave the bank before dark.
Bivouac & overnight camping is permitted at Lac Noir under standard French fishing law — one rod, within 10m of the water, no open fires.
Required permits & cards: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence card (CHI).
