Portugal is best reached from the UK via the Brittany Ferries Portsmouth–Santander crossing (~24 hours), landing you in northern Spain within a 2–3 hour drive of the Portuguese border. Alternatively, fly to Lisbon or Faro for southern venues. Driving via the Channel Tunnel is an option for the Minho/Douro region but adds significantly to journey time.

Licences are available online at the ICNF website or from local fishing shops. Species like carp and black bass are catch-and-keep on most waters — check regulations for your specific venue.
Portugal's fishing season is broadly year-round for most coarse species, with no statutory close season on most reservoirs. Carp fishing in the large Alentejo reservoirs (Alqueva, Vigia, Montargil) peaks from April through October, with late summer producing some of the continent's biggest catches. The water temperature in these large southern reservoirs stays high enough for active carp through November. Trout fishing in the northern mountain rivers (Lima, Minho tributaries) is restricted to the official season (typically February–August). For black bass, June through September in the reservoirs is outstanding.
