Alentejo is Portugal's fishing heartland for serious carp and barbel anglers. The Alqueva reservoir — created by the damming of the Guadiana in 2002 — is one of Western Europe's largest artificial lakes at 250 square kilometres, with a shoreline of over 1,100 kilometres. The warm climate and fertile margins produce exceptional carp growth rates, and specimen fish to well over 30 kg have been caught from Alqueva's waters. Several specialist carp fishing camps operate around the lake.
Beyond Alqueva, Alentejo holds a chain of reservoirs including Montargil, Maranhão, Tapada Grande and the Vigia reservoir near Serpa — each offering public coarse fishing under the ICNF national licence framework. ICNF designates certain Alentejo reservoirs for licensed night carp fishing (pesca noturna à carpa) — check individual venue pages for current ICNF night-fishing status. The region is approximately 7 hours from the Santander ferry crossing by road via Lisbon.

All anglers fishing in Alentejo — and across mainland Portugal — must hold a valid national fishing licence (Licença de Pesca Desportiva), issued by ICNF (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas). The licence can be purchased online at icnf.pt and is valid across all public waters in mainland Portugal. Juniors (under 14) and seniors (over 65) are exempt from the licensing fee.
Portugal's fishing framework is governed by Decreto-Lei 112/2017 and Portaria 360/2017 (amended by Portaria 108/2018). Most public lakes and reservoirs are available for coarse fishing under the national licence. Some ICNF-designated waters carry additional rules — including night carp fishing permissions on specific reservoirs. Waters managed under club or municipal concessions (concessões de pesca) operate their own local permit systems; check venue pages on PiscaMaps for links to the relevant authority.
Note: carp retention is mandatory on ordinary public rivers under Portuguese law — C&R sessions on rivers require a formal sport-fishing concession stretch. ICNF-designated reservoirs are the recommended destination for catch-and-release anglers.
