Fishing in Burgenland

Burgenland is Austria's premier lowland carp fishing destination. The Neusiedler See (Fertő), a shallow UNESCO World Heritage lake on the Hungarian border, is the centrepiece — holding large carp, bream, tench, pike and zander across its 300 km² of reed-fringed water. Additional flatland lakes, gravel pits and the Esterhazy estate waters make this the most accessible Austrian state for UK coarse anglers.

Night fishing is generally permitted at Burgenland's lowland waters — one of the few Austrian states where overnight carp sessions are openly allowed. Gastkarten are widely available from local tackle shops and the Hungarian border crossing area has a good selection of angling shops. The flat landscape and warm summers make this the most France-like Austrian fishing experience.

Species present across Burgenland's public waters include carp, bream, tench, pike, zander, perch, roach. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Burgenland

All anglers fishing public waters in Burgenland must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Burgenland fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.

In addition to the state licence, you need a Gastkarte (guest permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein. Gastkarten are widely available at tackle shops and increasingly bookable online via hejfish.com. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
