Upper Austria contains some of Austria's most famous lakes — the Attersee (largest alpine lake in Austria at 46 km²), Traunsee, Mondsee and Wolfgangsee. These Salzkammergut lakes are deep, clear and cold, holding lake trout, char, pike, bream, perch and whitefish. The Traun and Alm rivers drain into the lakes and offer classic fly fishing for brown trout and grayling.
Gastkarten for Attersee and Traunsee are available from local clubs and the LFV OÖ. Night fishing is generally restricted on the alpine lakes but some venues permit it during summer months.
