Fishing in Tyrol

Tyrol is Austria's most alpine state, dominated by the Inn river and its tributaries. The Inn, Lech, Isel and Ziller rivers hold excellent grayling, brown trout, rainbow trout and Danube salmon (huchen) in their middle and lower reaches. High-altitude mountain lakes such as the Achensee and Walchsee offer pike, perch and char in stunning scenery.

Tyrol is renowned for its huchen fishing — the Danube salmon reaches impressive sizes in the Inn and Isar rivers, particularly downstream of Innsbruck. Fly fishing is the dominant method, with strict catch-and-release rules on most trout and grayling stretches. Night fishing is generally not permitted on Tyrolean alpine rivers and streams.

Species present across Tyrol's public waters include brown trout, grayling, huchen, rainbow trout, char, pike, perch. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Tyrol

All anglers fishing public waters in Tyrol must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Tyrol fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.

In addition to the state licence, you need a Gastkarte (guest permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein. Gastkarten are widely available at tackle shops and increasingly bookable online via hejfish.com. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
