Étang d'Alet is a scenic high-altitude reservoir in the Pyrenees offering bank fishing for pike and black bass alongside trout and perch—an excellent alternative if you fancy a break from carp fishing in dramatically different terrain. At nearly 13 hectares with no night fishing allowed, it's best suited to daytime sessions, and the mountain setting means cooler water and a completely different fishing experience from lowland French venues. You'll need a licence from FDAAPPMA 09 (Ariège), and note that boats are prohibited, so bank access and casting distance are key.
Étang d'Alet is 568 miles from Calais. For UK anglers willing to make the drive into Occitanie — a region of warm summers and excellent coarse fishing, particularly for carp and catfish — the fishing is well worth it.
