The Algarve is best known for its Mediterranean beaches, but the region's interior holds productive freshwater fishing across several reservoirs and the Guadiana river on the Spanish border. The Beliche and Odeleite reservoirs in the eastern Algarve hold carp, black bass and barbel; the Bravura reservoir near Lagos in the west is a scenic stillwater venue accessible to visiting anglers. The lower Guadiana at Castro Marim holds large carp and barbel in its slow-moving tidal stretches.

The Ria Formosa coastal lagoon system near Faro is a UNESCO-protected site where shore fishing for sea bass, mullet, bream and flatfish is accessible without a separate saltwater permit at many points. All anglers fishing in Algarve — and across mainland Portugal — must hold a valid national fishing licence (Licença de Pesca Desportiva), issued by ICNF (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas). The licence can be purchased online at icnf.pt and is valid across all public waters in mainland Portugal. Juniors (under 14) and seniors (over 65) are exempt from the licensing fee.
Portugal's fishing framework is governed by Decreto-Lei 112/2017 and Portaria 360/2017 (amended by Portaria 108/2018). Most public lakes and reservoirs are available for coarse fishing under the national licence. Some ICNF-designated waters carry additional rules — including night carp fishing permissions on specific reservoirs.
