Fishing in Norte

Norte is Portugal's northernmost region and home to some of the country's finest fishing rivers. The Minho, which forms the natural border with Galicia in Spain, is one of Iberia's last great salmon rivers — Atlantic salmon and sea trout run from February through June, with the Minho producing some of the largest salmonids in Portugal. The Lima, Cávado and Ave rivers drain the rain-soaked hills of the Minho district, holding wild brown trout in their clear upper reaches.

The Douro — one of Europe's great rivers — enters Portugal at Miranda do Douro in the far east and flows west through dramatic gorge scenery to Porto. Its reservoirs, particularly Pocinho and Torga, hold excellent carp and barbel fishing. Peneda-Gerês National Park protects some of the finest wild trout rivers in the Iberian Peninsula — accessible with a day permit from ICNF. Norte is well served from the UK via the Brittany Ferries Santander crossing: Porto is approximately 2.5 hours from the Spanish port.

Species present across Norte's public waters include Atlantic salmon, sea trout, brown trout, barbel, carp, lamprey, eel. The exact mix varies by water type and venue — check individual venue pages for details.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Norte

All anglers fishing in Norte — and across mainland Portugal — must hold a valid national fishing licence (Licença de Pesca Desportiva), issued by ICNF (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas). The licence can be purchased online at icnf.pt and is valid across all public waters in mainland Portugal. Juniors (under 14) and seniors (over 65) are exempt from the licensing fee.

Portugal's fishing framework is governed by Decreto-Lei 112/2017 and Portaria 360/2017 (amended by Portaria 108/2018). Most public lakes and reservoirs are available for coarse fishing under the national licence. Some ICNF-designated waters carry additional rules — including night carp fishing permissions on specific reservoirs. Waters managed under club or municipal concessions (concessões de pesca) operate their own local permit systems; check venue pages on PiscaMaps for links to the relevant authority.

Note: carp retention is mandatory on ordinary public rivers under Portuguese law — C&R sessions on rivers require a formal sport-fishing concession stretch. ICNF-designated reservoirs are the recommended destination for catch-and-release anglers.
