Centro is Portugal's largest region by area and its most productive carp and barbel fishing zone. The Mondego — Portugal's only major river that rises and flows entirely within the country — cuts through the heart of the region, holding barbel, carp and black bass along its navigable length. The Zêzere tributary is dammed to form the Castelo do Bode reservoir near Tomar, which is widely regarded as the finest carp fishery in Portugal.
The Castelo do Bode reservoir covers over 1,500 hectares and holds carp to specimen weight alongside barbel, black bass, pike and perch. The Aguieira reservoir on the Mondego and the Fronhas reservoir near Arganil are further still-water venues with strong coarse fishing. The upper Zêzere in the Serra da Estrela — Portugal's highest mountain range — holds wild trout. Fishing licences for Centro's public waters are issued by ICNF online. From the Santander ferry: allow approximately 5 hours to reach Coimbra (Centro's main city).

All anglers fishing in Centro — and across mainland Portugal — must hold a valid national fishing licence (Licença de Pesca Desportiva), issued by ICNF (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas). The licence can be purchased online at icnf.pt and is valid across all public waters in mainland Portugal. Juniors (under 14) and seniors (over 65) are exempt from the licensing fee.
Portugal's fishing framework is governed by Decreto-Lei 112/2017 and Portaria 360/2017 (amended by Portaria 108/2018). Most public lakes and reservoirs are available for coarse fishing under the national licence. Some ICNF-designated waters carry additional rules — including night carp fishing permissions on specific reservoirs. Note: carp retention is mandatory on ordinary public rivers under Portuguese law — C&R sessions on rivers require a formal sport-fishing concession stretch. ICNF-designated reservoirs are the recommended destination for catch-and-release anglers.
