Slovenia's Carinthia (Koroška) region is a remote mountain area in the north, sharing the Austrian Carinthian Alps across the Karavanken and Pohorje ranges. The Meža river drains the Koroška valley through Ravne and Slovenj Gradec to join the Drava at Dravograd, holding trout, grayling and huchen in its mountain sections and barbel in the lower reach. The Mislinja tributary flows through the Šaleška valley, with trout in its upper reaches.
The region is off the beaten track for UK visitors but accessible via the Austrian Karavanken motorway tunnel. The Dravograd area where the Meža meets the Drava offers good coarse fishing for barbel, chub and asp. Klagenfurt airport (Austria) is 40 minutes across the border.
