Southeast Slovenia (Jugovzhodna Slovenija) covers the forested hill country between Ljubljana and the Croatian border, drained by the Krka river and its tributaries. The Krka rises from a spectacular spring (the source of the Krka) near Krka village and flows through a series of tufa barriers and waterfalls before entering Croatia, where it passes through Krka National Park. The Slovenian Krka — between its source and the border at Brežice — holds brown trout, grayling and huchen in its clear limestone-fed water, with carp and pike in the lower warmer sections.
The Kolpa (Kupa) forms the Croatian border in the south, a warm, turquoise-coloured river popular for swimming and coarse fishing for barbel, chub, carp and asp. The Lahinja and Rinža tributaries drain the Kočevje forests and provide smaller trout streams. Novo Mesto is the regional centre; Ljubljana airport is 60 minutes. Permits for the Krka and Kolpa are available from local fishing associations.
