Fishing in Savinja, Slovenia

Savinja region (Savinjska) is named for the Savinja river, one of Slovenia's finest coarse and fly-fishing rivers. The Savinja rises in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and flows through the Logarska dolina (one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the Alps) before descending through Celje to join the Sava near Zidani Most. The upper Savinja holds brown trout, grayling and huchen in pristine mountain water; the lower sections near Celje produce carp, barbel, chub and asp.

The Bolska and Dreta tributaries add further trout fishing options in the Posavje foothills. The Šoštanj reservoir (Velenjsko jezero) near the coal mining town of Velenje is a productive stillwater for carp, tench and pike. Celje is 50 minutes from Ljubljana by motorway; Graz airport (Austria) is 90 minutes. Permits for the Savinja are issued by Ribiška zveza Celje.

Key species in Savinja include brown trout, grayling, huchen, barbel, chub, carp, asp, tench, pike.
