Fishing in Posavje, Slovenia

Posavje is the lower Sava valley region between Zidani Most and the Croatian border at Rigonce, where the Sava transitions from an alpine to a lowland river. The Sava through Posavje holds catfish, carp, pike, zander and asp on broad public banks — some of the most productive and least-crowded coarse fishing in Slovenia. The river is joined by the Savinja, Sotla and Krka before crossing into Croatia, creating an exceptionally diverse downstream fishery.

The Brežice reservoir — formed by the Brežice hydroelectric dam — is Slovenia's most recently created large still water, holding catfish, carp and pike in a lake-like environment. The Sotla river on the Croatian border provides accessible smaller-river fishing. Brežice is 60 km from Ljubljana; Zagreb airport (Croatia) is under an hour away. Permits are available from Ribiška zveza Posavje.

Key species in Posavje include catfish, carp, pike, zander, asp, barbel, chub, tench.
