Coastal-Karst (Obalno-kraška) is Slovenia's only coastal region, covering the short Adriatic coastline around Koper, Izola, Piran and Portorož. Freshwater fishing is limited by the karst geology — rivers are short and often intermittent — but the Dragonja and Rižana rivers hold trout in their upper sections. The main fishing attraction here is sea angling from the rocky Adriatic coastline, which produces sea bass, bream, scorpionfish, octopus and squid, particularly around the Piran peninsula and Strunjan nature reserve.
The Socerb area inland holds some small karst lakes and streams with trout. The region is better suited to combining sea fishing with visits to nearby Croatia (Istria is 15 minutes by road) or the Italian Friulian coast. Trieste airport is 30 minutes; Ljubljana is 90 minutes. Day permits for freshwater venues are available from local fishing societies.
