Fishing in Aragón

Aragón stretches from the Pyrenean watershed in the north to the Ebro basin in the centre, making it one of Spain's premier trout and barbel fishing regions. The Ebro at Mequinenza — Europe's wels catfish capital — holds the continent's most reliable large-catfish fishing, with specimens exceeding 2 metres regularly caught from the Ebro and Ribarroja reservoirs. The limestone streams of the Pyrenean foothills are managed as wild trout reserves.

Aragón's upper Pyrenean rivers — the Ara, Gállego and Cinca — are gin-clear trout streams requiring sector-specific permits. The Embalse de Mequinenza and adjacent Ribarroja reservoir on the Ebro are the headline destinations for catfish, carp and zander, with specialist fishing camps operating along the banks. Aragón is part of the interautonomous licence scheme, covering 10 of Spain's 17 comunidades.

Species present across Aragón's public waters include wels catfish, carp, zander, barbel, brown trout, black bass, pike. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Aragón

Aragón is part of the 10-region interautonomous fishing licence scheme — a single Licencia de Pesca Interautonómica (~€25/year) covers fishing across all participating communities: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Comunitat Valenciana and Murcia.

The interautonomous licence is available online via the MITECO portal (miteco.gob.es). You will need a valid passport number or NIE number to complete the application. The licence is delivered by email and is valid from 1 January to 31 December each year. Non-EU residents are welcome to apply.

In addition to the interautonomous licence, some designated trout rivers and protected reservoirs in Aragón require a sector-specific permit — check venue pages on PiscaMaps for links to local permit offices. Always carry both the interautonomous licence and any sector permit when fishing.
