Fishing in Galicia

Galicia's Atlantic rivers — the Miño, Sil, Ulla and Tambre — are among Spain's finest salmon and sea trout rivers and arguably the best remaining public salmon fishing in Western Europe. The Miño on the Portuguese border holds particularly strong salmon runs from February through June. Wild brown trout, lamprey and shad also run the main rivers in season.

Salmon permits on the Miño, Ulla and other designated rivers are allocated by the Xunta de Galicia via an annual application system — demand far exceeds supply on the best beats. Wild trout fishing is more accessible with day permits from Xunta offices or online. Galicia is part of the interautonomous licence scheme. River lamprey (lamprea) is a prized seasonal quarry in February–March.

Species present across Galicia's public waters include Atlantic salmon, sea trout, brown trout, lamprey, shad, barbel. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Galicia

Galicia is part of the 10-region interautonomous fishing licence scheme — a single Licencia de Pesca Interautonómica (~€25/year) covers fishing across all participating communities: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Comunitat Valenciana and Murcia.

The interautonomous licence is available online via the MITECO portal (miteco.gob.es). You will need a valid passport number or NIE number to complete the application. The licence is delivered by email and is valid from 1 January to 31 December each year. Non-EU residents are welcome to apply.

In addition to the interautonomous licence, some designated trout rivers and protected reservoirs in Galicia require a sector-specific permit — check venue pages on PiscaMaps for links to local permit offices. Always carry both the interautonomous licence and any sector permit when fishing.
