Castilla y León is Spain's largest autonomous community and covers the entire upper Duero basin. The Duero and its main tributaries — the Esla, Pisuerga and Tormes — hold excellent barbel, carp and black bass fishing. The region also manages some of the finest wild trout rivers in Spain, particularly in the Sierra de la Demanda (La Rioja border) and the mountains of León and Salamanca.
The Embalse de Ricobayo on the Esla and the Embalse de Almendra on the Tormes are large reservoirs popular for carp and black bass. The upper Esla in the Picos de Europa holds wild brown trout and salmon. Permits for trout rivers are issued by the Servicio Territorial de Medio Ambiente by province. Castilla y León is part of the interautonomous licence scheme.
Species present across Castilla y León's public waters include brown trout, barbel, carp, black bass, pike, zander, bream. The exact mix varies by water type and area.
Castilla y León is part of the 10-region interautonomous fishing licence scheme — a single Licencia de Pesca Interautonómica (~€25/year) covers fishing across all participating communities: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Comunitat Valenciana and Murcia.
The interautonomous licence is available online via the MITECO portal (miteco.gob.es). You will need a valid passport number or NIE number to complete the application. The licence is delivered by email and is valid from 1 January to 31 December each year. Non-EU residents are welcome to apply.
In addition to the interautonomous licence, some designated trout rivers and protected reservoirs in Castilla y León require a sector-specific permit — check venue pages on PiscaMaps for links to local permit offices. Always carry both the interautonomous licence and any sector permit when fishing.
