Fishing in Cantabria

Cantabria's short but productive rivers — the Pas, Besaya, Asón and Nansa — drain the Cantabrian Mountains directly into the Bay of Biscay. Wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout run the Pas and Asón in season, while the upper river beats hold excellent wild brown trout. The Embalse del Ebro in the south of the region is one of northern Spain's largest reservoirs, holding carp, bream, pike and barbel.

Salmon river permits in Cantabria are allocated via an annual lottery run by the Dirección General de Biodiversidad. Brown trout day permits are available across a wider range of beats. Cantabria is part of the interautonomous licence scheme. The Embalse del Ebro sits on the Burgos/Cantabria border — permits are available from either administration.

Species present across Cantabria's public waters include Atlantic salmon, sea trout, brown trout, carp, bream, pike. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Cantabria

Cantabria does not participate in the interautonomous licence scheme and requires its own regional Licencia de Pesca Fluvial. Licences are issued by the Cantabria regional environmental authority — check the official consejería de medio ambiente website for current fees, valid waters and purchase details.

In addition to the regional licence, many designated rivers and reservoirs in Cantabria require a sector-specific permit or permiso de pesca. Trout and salmon rivers typically operate under a permit allocation system — check well in advance if you intend to fish designated salmonid beats. Local tackle shops often stock sector permits or can advise on current availability.
