Extremadura is home to Spain's most impressive reservoir system — the Alcántara and Cedillo reservoirs on the Tagus (shared with Portugal) are among the largest artificial lakes in western Europe and hold world-class carp, barbel and black bass fishing. The Sierra de Gata rivers hold wild trout, and the Guadiana basin provides extensive coarse fishing across the dehesa landscape.
Alcántara reservoir near Cáceres is particularly famous for carp to exceptional size and attracts specialist English carp anglers each season. Permits are straightforward — Extremadura is part of the interautonomous licence scheme, and fishing is available on most public reservoirs without additional permits. Local tackle shops in Cáceres and Mérida supply day permits for restricted waters.
Species present across Extremadura's public waters include carp, barbel, black bass, brown trout, pike, zander, bream. The exact mix varies by water type and area.
Extremadura is part of the 10-region interautonomous fishing licence scheme — a single Licencia de Pesca Interautonómica (~€25/year) covers fishing across all participating communities: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Comunitat Valenciana and Murcia.
The interautonomous licence is available online via the MITECO portal (miteco.gob.es). You will need a valid passport number or NIE number to complete the application. The licence is delivered by email and is valid from 1 January to 31 December each year. Non-EU residents are welcome to apply.
In addition to the interautonomous licence, some designated trout rivers and protected reservoirs in Extremadura require a sector-specific permit — check venue pages on PiscaMaps for links to local permit offices. Always carry both the interautonomous licence and any sector permit when fishing.
