Fishing in Dubrovnik-Neretva, Croatia

Dubrovnik-Neretva county stretches along Croatia's southernmost Dalmatian coastline and includes the Neretva delta — one of the most important freshwater habitats in the eastern Mediterranean. The Neretva, which rises in Bosnia and flows through a broad lowland delta to the Adriatic near Ploče, holds eels, carp, pike and catfish in its delta channels, alongside migratory sea bass and grey mullet in the tidal reaches. The delta's network of channels and irrigation lakes is navigable by boat and offers unique fishing in a Mediterranean wetland setting.

The upper Neretva (upstream in Bosnia) is one of the Balkans' finest huchen rivers — Croatian anglers cross the border to access it with Bosnian permits. The county also encompasses the Pelješac peninsula and Korčula island, where sea fishing adds another dimension. Dubrovnik airport serves the region with direct UK flights in summer. The Neretva delta is best explored by boat, available for hire at Opuzen.

Key species in Dubrovnik-Neretva include eel, carp, pike, catfish, huchen, sea bass, grey mullet, bream.
