Međimurje is Croatia's northernmost and smallest county, an island of flat agricultural land enclosed by the Mura and Drava rivers on the borders with Slovenia and Hungary. This unique geography creates an exceptional coarse fishing environment — the Mura is a fast, braided river with productive gravel-bar and backwater fishing for huchen, barbel, asp and chub, while the Drava on the south forms a boundary with Koprivnica-Križevci county and offers similar specimen fishing with the added draw of catfish.
Međimurje's numerous gravel-extraction lakes — particularly around Čakovec and Prelog — hold pike, perch, carp and bream in clear water. The county is only 30 minutes from Varaždin and 60 minutes from Zagreb by road. The proximity to Maribor (Slovenia) and the Austrian border makes it an easy add-on for UK anglers fishing Austria or Slovenia. Permits are issued by ŠRD Međimurje in Čakovec.
