Lika-Senj is Croatia's largest county by area, covering the high karst plateau of Lika between the Velebit massif and the Plitvice Lakes. This remote, sparsely populated mountain county contains some of Croatia's most pristine fishing — the Gacka river near Otočac is one of the finest chalk-stream trout fisheries in the Balkans, famed for its large wild brown trout feeding on a rich chalk-stream invertebrate fauna comparable to southern England's classic rivers. The Lika river and its tributaries add grayling and huchen to the trout fishing.
Plitvice Lakes National Park — Croatia's most visited natural site — lies entirely within Lika-Senj and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fishing is not permitted within the park boundary, but the surrounding rivers and lakes outside the park offer excellent opportunities. The county is accessible via the A1 motorway from Zagreb (90 minutes to Otočac). Permits for the Gacka are in high demand — book ahead through the Otočac fishing association.
