Zagreb County surrounds the capital in a wide arc from the Zagorje hills in the north to the Sava plain in the south, and holds over 200 public fishing venues across three river systems. The Sava — Croatia's longest river and one of Central Europe's great coarse fisheries — runs through the south of the county, holding carp to specimen weight, catfish, pike, zander and asp on accessible public banks. The Kupa river marks the southern boundary with Sisak-Moslavina, offering excellent barbel and chub fishing where it enters slower water.
The Lonjsko Polje nature park — a vast Sava floodplain reserve — is one of Croatia's most important fish habitats, with regulated fishing for catfish, carp and tench in its seasonal lakes and oxbows. The Odra canal and the Krapina river in the north add variety. County permits are issued by local fishing associations (ribolovne zajednice) and are available at tackle shops throughout the county.
