Fishing in Split-Dalmatia, Croatia

Split-Dalmatia is the largest county in Croatia by area and one of its most varied fishing destinations, combining the dramatic Dalmatian coastline with the fast rivers and mountain lakes of the Dinaric hinterland. The Cetina river is the centrepiece — rising in the Dinara mountains and flowing through a spectacular canyon to reach the Adriatic at Omiš, it holds trout and grayling in its upper reaches, transforming into a productive barbel and chub fishery as it descends. The Cetina canyon near Omiš is one of the most dramatic river fishing settings in the Mediterranean.

The Imotska jezera — a group of karst lakes in the Imotski polje including the famous Red Lake (Crveno jezero) and Blue Lake (Modro jezero) — are among Croatia's most remarkable geological features. Buško Blato reservoir on the Bosnian border holds large carp, catfish and pike. Split is served by a major international airport and ferry connections from Ancona and Bari, making it one of the most accessible Dalmatian bases for UK visiting anglers.

Key species in Split-Dalmatia include trout, grayling, barbel, chub, huchen, carp, catfish, pike.
