Fishing in Zadar, Croatia

Zadar county spans the central Dalmatian coast and its hinterland, from the Velebit massif to the Adriatic, and holds over 295 public fishing venues across a diverse landscape of karst lakes, fast rivers and coastal waters. The Zrmanja river — one of Croatia's most scenic canyon rivers — is famous for its clear blue-green water, rapids and pools holding huchen, trout, barbel and chub. The Krupa tributary and the Zrmanja's lower reaches near Obrovac offer excellent coarse fishing in dramatic gorge scenery.

The Novigrad Sea (Novigradsko more) and the Vrana Lake nature park near Biograd na Moru are the county's top stillwater venues — Vrana, at 30 square kilometres, is Croatia's largest natural lake and holds eels, carp and pike alongside migratory birds that make it a protected area. Inland karst poljes (flat valley floors) flood seasonally to create temporary fishing lakes. UK anglers typically reach Zadar by flying to the international airport or by ferry from Ancona (Italy).

Key species in Zadar include huchen, trout, barbel, chub, carp, eel, pike, bream.
