Fishing in Krapina-Zagorje, Croatia

Krapina-Zagorje is the rolling hill country between Zagreb and the Slovenian border, a landscape of vineyards, medieval castles and small river valleys that holds some surprisingly productive fishing. The Krapina river — the county's main watercourse — flows south from the Macelj ridge through a broad valley holding chub, barbel and carp before joining the Sava at Zaprešić. The Sutla river marks the Slovenian border and holds trout and grayling in its fast upper sections.

The county's small reservoir fisheries and managed carp lakes around Krapina town provide accessible stillwater fishing. The Zagorje region is one of Croatia's most popular tourist areas for its thermal spas and castle country. Krapina is 40 minutes north of Zagreb by road. Permits are issued by ŠRD Krapina.

Key species in Krapina-Zagorje include chub, barbel, carp, tench, trout, grayling, perch.
