Fishing in Berlin

Berlin's urban waterways — the Havel, Spree, Dahme and the city's many interconnected lakes — provide surprisingly productive fishing. Müggelsee, Tegeler See and the Wannsee are large, accessible lakes within the city boundary offering carp, pike, perch, bream and tench. Berlin operates under a unique city fishing licence (Berliner Angelschein) rather than a Fischereischein.

Berlin's fishing is managed by the LFB (Landesfischereiverband Berlin) and is unusually accessible — day tickets are available at many city banks. The Havel chain from Wannsee to Spandau is particularly popular for predator fishing, while the Müggelsee holds excellent bream and tench. Night fishing is permitted on designated waters.

Species present across Berlin's public waters include carp, bream, tench, pike, perch, zander, roach. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Berlin

All anglers fishing public waters in Berlin must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Berlin fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.

In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.

Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
