Rhineland-Palatinate is Germany's premier barbel fishing destination. The Rhine, Moselle, Nahe and Lahn rivers flow through the state's wine country and hold strong populations of barbel, chub, asp and bream. The Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen offers some of the most varied river coarse fishing in the country.
The Moselle valley is particularly well known for its barbel and chub fishing, with accessible stretches between Trier and Koblenz available on day tickets. The Laacher See, a volcanic crater lake near Andernach, holds unusual species including vendace. Trout fishing is available in the upland Eifel streams to the north.

All anglers fishing public waters in Rhineland-Palatinate must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Rhineland-Palatinate fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.
In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
