Fishing in Brandenburg

Brandenburg surrounds Berlin and contains over 3,000 lakes, making it Germany's premier still-water fishing destination. The Templin Lake District, Scharmützelsee, Werbellinsee and Ruppiner Seenplatte offer some of the best carp, pike, perch, bream and tench fishing in Central Europe. Many waters are accessible with day tickets from the state fishery authority (LFV Brandenburg).

Night fishing permissions vary by water — Brandenburg has some of the most relaxed regulations in Germany, with a number of larger lakes openly permitting overnight carp sessions. The river Oder and its oxbow lakes on the Polish border hold asp, zander and large wels catfish. Brandenburg's flat landscape and high water table create a wetland character unlike any other German state.

Species present across Brandenburg's public waters include carp, bream, tench, pike, perch, zander, asp, wels catfish. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Brandenburg

All anglers fishing public waters in Brandenburg must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Brandenburg fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.

In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.

Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
