Saxony's landscape ranges from the Erzgebirge uplands on the Czech border to the Elbe lowlands around Dresden and Leipzig. The post-lignite-mining lakes (Restlöcher) in the Leipzig region are some of Germany's newest and most productive stillwaters — large, deep, clear and increasingly popular for carp, pike and bream fishing.
The Elbe downstream from Dresden holds large bream, barbel and asp, while the Mulde and White Elster rivers are known for barbel and chub. The Kriebsteintalsperre and Talsperre Bautzen are popular reservoirs for pike and perch. Day ticket fishing is available on many state-owned waters.
Species present across Saxony's public waters include carp, bream, barbel, pike, perch, zander, asp. The exact mix varies by water type and area.
All anglers fishing public waters in Saxony must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Saxony fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.
In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
