Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is defined by the Baltic coastline and the Mecklenburg Lake Plateau — one of Europe's largest inland lake districts. The Müritz, Germany's largest inland lake, sits at the heart of the Müritz National Park and offers outstanding pike, perch, bream and tench fishing. Over 2,000 lakes span the state, connected by slow-flowing rivers rich in predator species.
The coastal lagoons (Bodden) offer sea trout and Baltic pike fishing, while the Peene and Recknitz rivers hold asp, chub and barbel. Day tickets are available for many state-managed waters. Night fishing is regulated at venue level. The state's low population density means many waters see far less pressure than comparable lakes in western Germany.
Species present across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's public waters include pike, perch, zander, bream, tench, asp, sea trout. The exact mix varies by water type and area.
All anglers fishing public waters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.
In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
