Fishing in Hamburg

Hamburg's fishing centres on the tidal Elbe and the Alster lake system within the city, plus the network of Elbe oxbow lakes and gravel pits to the south. The Alster Inner and Outer lakes in the heart of Hamburg hold carp, bream, perch and roach, while the Elbe estuary produces zander, asp, sea trout and occasional salmon.

The Port of Hamburg area and the downstream Elbe hold large asp, zander and bream. The Hamburg Süderelbe is managed as a nature reserve but has accessible stretches for day ticket fishing. City fishing is regulated by the Hamburg Fischereigesetz, which requires an Angelschein.

Species present across Hamburg's public waters include carp, bream, asp, zander, sea trout, perch, roach. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Hamburg

All anglers fishing public waters in Hamburg must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Hamburg fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.

In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.

Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
