Fishing in Thuringia

Thuringia's fishing is dominated by reservoirs in the Thuringian Forest uplands and the river systems of the Saale, Werra and White Elster. The Bleiloch reservoir and Hohenwarte reservoir on the Saale are Germany's largest reservoirs and hold pike, perch, zander and brown trout. The upland streams of the Rennsteig watershed provide classic trout fishing.

The Ilm, Gera and Apfelstädt rivers are managed primarily for trout and grayling under the state fishery authority. Lower reaches of the Saale near Jena and Gera hold barbel and chub. Day tickets for reservoir fishing are generally available at the dam offices or from local Angelvereine.

Species present across Thuringia's public waters include brown trout, grayling, pike, perch, zander, barbel, bream. The exact mix varies by water type and area.

Fishing Licence & Permits in Thuringia

All anglers fishing public waters in Thuringia must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Thuringia fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.

In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.

Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
