North Rhine-Westphalia contains Germany's densest network of urban fishing waters. The Rhine flows through Cologne and Düsseldorf, while the Ruhr and its associated gravel-pit lakes offer coarse fishing close to major population centres. The Sauerland region in the east holds clear trout reservoirs and the Bigge and Möhne dams are popular destinations.
With over 18 million residents, NRW has a correspondingly large angling community and many club waters are heavily subscribed. Day ticket waters around the Ruhrgebiet are accessible but can be busy at weekends. The Rhine holds carp, bream, chub, barbel, asp, zander and roach, with records taken regularly from stretches near Bonn and Cologne.
Species present across North Rhine-Westphalia's public waters include carp, bream, chub, barbel, asp, zander, roach, trout. The exact mix varies by water type and area.
All anglers fishing public waters in North Rhine-Westphalia must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the North Rhine-Westphalia fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.
In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
