Hesse is divided by the Rhine Gorge in the west and the Rhön uplands in the east. The Main and Rhine rivers provide classic barbel, chub and bream fishing, while the Eder reservoir north of Kassel and the Edersee offer pike, perch and trout in a scenic landscape. Frankfurt's urban rivers and gravel pits are busy but productive.
The Fulda river system holds good trout and grayling in its upper reaches, while the lower Main near Frankfurt holds surprisingly large carp and zander. The Vogelsbergkreis reservoir chain in central Hesse provides accessible trout fishing. Many waters are managed by the HFV (Hessischer Fischereiverband) with day tickets available.
Species present across Hesse's public waters include barbel, chub, bream, carp, pike, perch, trout, grayling. The exact mix varies by water type and area.
All anglers fishing public waters in Hesse must hold a valid Fischereischein (state fishing licence) issued by the Hesse fishery authority. Licences require passing the Fischerprüfung — a written and practical exam covering fish species, ecology and regulations.
In addition to the state licence, you need an Angelkarte (permit) for each individual water, issued by the managing Fischereiverein or fishery authority. Day tickets (Tageskarten) are available at many public waters and are the most practical option for visiting UK anglers who have not sat the Fischerprüfung. Night fishing, boat use and bivvy camping are regulated at venue level — always check the specific rules before travelling.
Fishing companion rule (Angelbegleitpflicht) — some German club waters require visiting anglers without a Fischereischein to be accompanied by a licensed German angler. This applies mainly on Angelverein club waters, and is most enforced in Bavaria. When purchasing a Tageskarte or Gastkarte, confirm whether an accompanying licensed angler is required before travelling.
